More Peeves of Expression

I don't like it when people write "tow the line" instead of "toe the line."

The expression is intended to convey a sense that people are cooperating with policy, meaning they are standing perfectly and rigidly in place as dictated. It does not mean that people are dragging a string around.

I'm sitting here picturing men in uniform and other people are picturing shrimp trawlers. Stop it!

The one I can't stand is when people write "loose" when they mean "lose". One can "lose one's mind". "Loose" lips can sink ships. "Loose" bowels can definitely ruin one's day. But when someone writes of "loosing" his heart or his eyeglasses, all I can think is "loser!"

Well MAYBE some people could consider that not everyone is a perfect speller.
For some people (as for me) English is the second language.
I for once write LOOSER all the time.Just recently someone told me that's wrong.

Noone is perfect.I find it unreasonable to get mad about typos.
As if there aren't other, much more serious problems in life.

My two cents.:-)

A typo is one thing, but some people really think that the expression is "tow the line."

'Tow' is a completely different concept from 'toe.' 'Loose' and 'lose' are, too.

My complaint here isn't about typos, it's about mastery of language. When someone can't use words properly, they can't use ideas properly.

In that vein: "It didn't phase me at all." Faze! Faze! Completely different word!

Hmm... This conversation has definitely peaked my interest. I was talking to a linguist friend of mine, and she says that supposably the English language is going to merge the spelling of many words because of this... words like "whom" won't be used anymore... contractions will lose their apostrophes. For all intensive purposes, the language will get less specific and more sloppy... at least according to her.

...
