I just don't know how I'm going to wake up in time for work tomorrow.

Our evening started with a drink at the rooftop bar 230 Fifth Avenue. The view from this bar is incredible. You exit the elevator into a lounge with gaudy, hideous decor. It's so bad that more than one person remarked independently that it looks like a strip club. But you take the stairs up and turn left and as you emerge onto the roof, the Empire State Building looms up in front of you and the rest of the Manhattan skyline spreads out around you. It's glorious.
Unfortunately, the price of the drinks reflects the great view. A tiny, weak Jack & Coke cost some $12, so after a single drink, we headed down the street to Craftbar for dinner.
Craftbar is in Tom Colicchio's "craft" family of eateries. Craft is his flag ship, Craftbar came next, and 'Wich Craft is a set of sandwich stands found around town.
The decor is very hip and masculine. The music was a bit loud, but the service was very, very good. The food was also very good.
We started with three appetizers: the Berkshire pork shoulder, almonds and olives, and sage-wrapped sausage. They were all delicious and a good reflection of the whole menu, which is solid with a lot of game and stuff like that. Not typical meats, really, but all very good.
I had the Daurade Royale, Mama Laverne had the baby chicken, and I can't remember what others had, but everyone said their meal was delicious.
The portions were smallish, but I appreciate that because it left room for dessert. I had the Brown Sugar cake. One guy had the sundae. The others had the chocolate cake. Again, delicious.
And the prices at dinner were very reasonable although I was the only one who had a glass of wine.
After dinner, we headed around the corner to this dive bar that I like when I'm in the Flatiron district called No Idea. The bar is grungy, but the drinks are big and cheap. My Jack & Coke came in a pint glass and cost me just $8. So, we settled in for some lively conversation until we parted ways.
We had originally planned on doing a little bar hopping so that they could experience different aspects of NYC night life, but they are like me and do not like staying up late. Combine that with their having been shopping and walking around most of the day, and they were ready to turn in a little after midnight. I was glad of it because I am not really the best person to consult when it comes to night life.
So, it was a very nice evening and I had SUCH a nice time. They've invited me to come along with them to dinner this evening, but I have a potential conflict, so it's up in the air. My other engagement is with another couple of friends that I haven't seen in over six month, and if I weren't very nearly desperate to see them again, I would likely change my plans because I enjoyed their company so much last night.
