Top Design Semi-Final Summary
Preston
First of all, the more Eddie and Nathan hate Preston, the more I love him. The more he complains about having to be around these people and says he really needs some time alone, the more I want to hug him. And with every shot of him sleeping while the others were having a loud, drunken party for Eddie, the more I wanted to make out with him.
I can deal without his whining about people dying and single moms and stuff. And I can definitely deal without him shaving his chest. (Have I ranted about how much I hate that?)
Nevertheless, I think he's awesome.
His room this week was sleek and creative. It was representative of the eclectic sophistication I expect from him with the mixed textures and rich colors. I loved his wallpaper. I liked some of the pieces of furniture. But I didn't like the room very much as a whole. And I hate those silver antlers on the table even if they do improve the composition.
Whatever. This episode is a gateway episode. The point isn't who did the best room but who presented the best vision for the house for the final and Preston is a shoo-in.
Eddie
He's uppity and arrogant. His room looks like a magazine spread and utterly impersonal. No one lives in that room. But I have mixed feelings about it and I think the judges do, too.
His designs are pretty. They look very Martha Stewart. There is no question that he does good design. But I would not call him creative. If these rooms present a vision for the rest of the house, there's a legitimate question about whether or not the judges will want to see a whole house of this. Frankly, I do not.
Nathan
Insane. His room is boring. His performance is wildly inconsistent and this room is a perfect representation of his work with good touches and a whole lot of stank.
As much as I love some of his touches, I think he will ultimately fail.
Let's face it: I'm totally biased. I want Preston to win.
Ondine
She did a lot better this week. She only missed on a few points this week. She needed curtains. But overall, I liked the dizzying, graphic wallpaper -- I don't think it translated to television well, but I like the idea behind it. I dislike that giant photo as "art," but in the room is made good decoration. I agree that her sofa did need another little throw pillow.
I wish Ondine had more personality.

"Nukyular" is a Vocabulary Don't
She's vapid and silly, but this video gives me the giggles.
Metaphysically insignificant? Check!
Politically foolish? Check!
Economically disastrous? Check!
Excessive preening in a bikini? Check!
Finds a rhyme for "Escalade?" Check!
